Wanting a Quick Fix? |
Aug 22, 2009 |
Recently I heard about a book titled Transforming Together by Ele Parrott. Ele’s book is about mentoring and helping people grow spiritually in all aspects of their lives. In the first chapter of her book she tells a story about her friend Sandra who was going through a crisis. She listened and when she felt it was time to share she asked her friend this question. “Sandra, do you want a quick fix, or do you desire to be transformed by Jesus?”
The human nature in many of us would probably settle for that quick fix. “I need help now because I can’t carry this burden any longer.”
In this book Parrot also shares her definition of mentoring that will stop you in your tracks. “Spiritual mentoring is coming alongside of and partnering with who the Holy Spirit is being in the life of another person and infusing truth into that person’s reality. Wow, “infusing truth “into that person’s reality! This is not about patting someone on the back and simply saying God will see you through, but partnering with them and helping them know who God is in a deeper transformational way.
As you look at your list of champions this next week (and this is assuming you will) pay close attention to those who you haven’t connected with in awhile. Set up a time to hear their story, or get to know them more than you already do, and seek to see how God might use you to partner with them while allowing the Holy Spirit to grow not only them but you in a greater transformational way.
You see, it isn’t what you know, but who you know that matters. Imagine what could happen in your organization (and your own life) if you set the bar high and focused on spiritual transformation.
As you examine, and adapt, your PEO champion activities ask yourself this question. Are my PEO activities/programs offering a quick fix to our organization (or our champions), or are they helping my organization (and my champions) to be transformed by Jesus into becoming all he desires for us to be?
Activity-driven programs that don’t ignite transformation, quickly pale when contrasted with the richness and potential of authentic spiritual mentoring.
