Mission Increase Foundation created The Ten Principles of Transformational Giving, and #10 has got to be my favorite.
“Champions connect with each other and with organizations not according to the amount of their giving but by the degree of comprehensive personal ownership they are exhibiting in the cause.”
But wait, champions always connect with organizations based on how much money they give. What else is there? How else does the org decide who gets the hand written thank you note or the invitation to your keynote speaker’s reception prior to your annual dinner? Or that nice Christmas ornament with your ministry slogan engraved on the front?
Rich donors like to stick together, right? We assume that if they are giving similar amounts of money they must have similar interest and passion in your cause, right?
WRONG! I find it so much more exciting to be with those who are involved at the same level as I am, those that like doing the same things, serving in the same way, participating in the same activities. Would you rather spend time with another champion giving the same amount of money as you, or someone who also spent time with aids orphans in Africa? Would you prefer to sit with a peer donor at the banquet or a champion who tutors kids alongside you at the community center?
Through MIF’s PEO (Participation, Engagement, Ownership) model, we teach you how to group champions based on their level of involvement, electronically track that involvement and most importantly, how to increase that involvement.
Next time you have a special reception for your keynote speaker, I’ll be expecting the room to be filled with your table hosts, your volunteers in the program you are raising funds for and yes, those that have been faithful in supporting the cause through their giving, regardless of the amount of the gift.
