I want to transform Christmas! |
Dec 21, 2009 |
I don’t want to change the date. And I don’t want to change the focus to anything but celebrating Jesus’ birth. I want to change what Christmas has come to represent, even among most Christians. I want us to be transformed through the experience of acknowledging our Savior’s birth and what that means to each of us, and taking some time out of our year to celebrate and give thanks for what God has done through His Son.
Anybody want to help? I can’t do this alone. It would take an army of us to really transform Christmas, and each of us as believers in the process.
What would a transformational Christmas look like? It would most certainly be about others, not ourselves. It would be truly focused on Christ and what He means to us. It would put us in a position of coaching friends and family as they come along side and be part of our army. And it would be about sharing Christ’s love with those who don’t know Him.
I think Christmas at my house might look something like this:
• The events we attend would be Christ-centered and in celebration of His birth
• The focus of our decorations would be the Nativity scene
• The gifts we buy would not be for family and friends (or ourselves), but would be for those in need and those who are struggling
• Those gifts would be something meaningful and impactful chosen specifically for each person
• The food we eat would be birthday cake
• The parties we have would be for those without family and friends to share the holidays with and for those who don’t know Christ
• The prayers we say would be for other’s needs, not our own
• And we would actually be in church on Christmas Day!
So, do you still want to be part of the Transformation Army? We have a lot of work to do before next Christmas if this transformation is going to happen – I am a long way off at this point! Will you join me during 2010 as I prepare my heart and mind, (and my kids J), for a Transformational Christmas next year?
